Oracle ships Solaris 11 OS

V3.co.uk reports.

Solaris 11, available immediately for Sparc and x86 systems, is the first major release of the platform since Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems in 2009, and demonstrates the company's commitment to investing in Solaris, Oracle said.

CloudPro says the company claims Solaris Zone virtualisation scales far more effectively than the equivalent from VMware, allowing customers to create low-cost centre topologies within a single OS instance.

“This is the first cloud OS,” says John Fowler, executive VP for systems at Oracle.

The new software also has storage capability. Oracle Solaris ZFS delivers flash-enabled tiered storage pools, line speed encryption and the scalability to store and manage unlimited amounts of data.

Oracle Solaris 11 enhancements include optimised shared memory management, I/O improvements, integrated resource management and crypto off-load, CBR Online notes.

Fowler said Oracle Solaris 11 is the most significant operating system release of the past decade, with built-in server, storage and now, network virtualisation.
