Oracle, Sun cut deployment time in e-business infrastructure solution

Johannesburg, 29 Jan 2002

In recognising the global demand for faster-quicker-cheaper-simpler, Sun Microsystems and Oracle Corp have effectively reduced the complexities of implementing software and hardware in an e-business infrastructure.

Oracle's recently introduced Oracle9i Real Application Clusters Certified Configuration, powered by the Sun platform, is a "one-stop shop" solution designed to reduce costs associated with having to integrate operating systems, applications and tools by providing pre-integrated, fully equipped systems ready for operational deployment.

"Customers are no longer required to contact a series of organisations for integration, support and maintenance," says Deon Roos, product manager (Server Technologies) at Oracle SA. "The certified, pre-installed, pre-tested and optimised system's hardware and software offering can be purchased via a single reseller source, which thus reduces acquisition and deployment time, hence having a positive impact on the bottom line."

Oracle9i Real Application Clusters Certified Configuration runs on the Sun Fire 280R server system with Sun StorEdge T3 Arrays, fully integrated with Sun Cluster 3.0. The system runs on the established and leading Operating System (OS) for availability, scalability and security in the Internet age - Sun's Solaris 8 Operating Environment (OE).

"Combining the Sun Fire server and Oracle9i Real Application Clusters offers our customers the quickest means to deploy reliable, scalable solutions for cutting-edge clustered database technology," says Stefano Mattiello, managing director of Sun Microsystems SA.

"This gives our customers more time to focus on their mission-critical applications and their core business," Mattiello adds.

The benefit of running Oracle9i with Sun's StorEdge T3 array is the provision of a new and advanced generation of flexible, reliable storage systems allowing businesses to scale storage capacity, performance and availability as business needs continue to grow.

"The Oracle-Sun solution has been bench-marked and has proven its performance capabilities," says Roos of Oracle. "Now this Clustered Certified Configuration Solution can be utilised with Sun and Oracle's stamp of approval."

"We will continue to work with Oracle to deliver integrated, high performance solutions that can reduce our customers total cost of operations," says Mattiello.

"Customers can now purchase an Oracle certified, pre-installed, pre-tested solution through the channel, dramatically reducing their deployment time," he concludes.
