Local mass data storage manufacturer, Orca Technologies, has appointed Amcotec to distribute its Orca high capacity data storage solution. Amcotec supplies and provides services for IBM System 390 mainframes, and high-end midrange systems.
Amcotec opened a systems storage division in November 1998 to address the midrange needs of its clients. Amcotec sales manager, Gray Farrell says that the demand for storage solutions attached to midrange systems is increasing dramatically at sites where dedicated servers are used for desktop, Internet and multimedia applications. "Very few companies run solely on a mainframe platform. Instead, they are making increasing use of midrange servers dedicated to critical functions. They are requesting a storage solution that can attach to multiple servers, and that can provide external data storage to the data-hungry applications these servers run." Farrell says that Amcotec will provide Orca storage connectivity to HP, Sun, Digital and Intel servers.
Amcotec will address a niche market, which is growing dramatically, says Orca Technologies channel manager, Lennie Botha. "Midrange systems in the mainframe environment are fulfilling a critical function in harnessing new technologies and delivering new systems to the desktop. These technologies, however, demand mass data storage and data management. Orca, with its excellent price/performance ratio, provides a cost effective entry-level storage solution that can be scaled up to accommodate long-term growth. At the same time, its multiple- and network-attach capabilities make it a versatile storage solution."
"The biggest barrier to purchasing external storage is the huge price tag of entry level systems," says Farrell. "Orca, being a local product, is very attractively priced. We find that our customers are very positive about the fact that the Orca is local, and we now find ourselves in the new position of having direct access to the designer and manufacturer of the solution we sell."
