OTG launches Asus AMD motherboard

One Technology Group (OTG) is supplying its channel with the new AMD K7M motherboard from Asus, supporting the new K7 Athlon processor from AMD. This board is being aimed at the medium to high-end user.

"The 200MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) on the board allows us to also be flexible at the low-end server market," says Richard Watters, product manager at OTG.

Watters is optimistic about the level of market penetration he expects with the new board. "Worldwide AMD are calling the Athlon the Pentium III killer," he says.

This board has the same features as the other Intel-supporting Asus boards. It is an ATX device, offers Wake On LAN (WOL) and chassis intrusion device. "The intrusion device is an important feature when it comes to lowering TCO because the IT manager will be automatically updated when any changes are made to a machine," says Watters.

The processor has 128KB level one cache, which plays an important role in the overall performance of a machine because it outperforms level two cache, although there might be less of it. The current Pentium III only has 32KB of level one cache.

The K7M motherboard from Asus has Ultra DMA 66 enabled while the current boards for Intel Pentium BX & ZX chipsets are limited to Ultra DMA 33. The DMA rating refers to the speed of information transfer between the hard drive, and the system bus.

DMA 66 has twice the potential burst rate of the DMA 33. "The board offers four Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports, and as all Asus boards, it is NTSL approved." Watters says.

The K7M is expected to be slightly more cost-effective than the BX boards for Pentium processors.
