SMEs generally have a low IT awareness, with few fully understanding the importance of e-business, says netsurit MD Orrin Klopper, presenting the results of recent research to the local market.
Klopper says the research shows that small organisations have a low awareness of what an ASP is, and do not appreciate the potential benefits of e-commerce. They are not inclined to invest heavily in new technology or training, and have a lower frequency of PC replacement. In addition, their IT-related decisions are usually made by an in-house IT manager, financial manager or company MD. This is not ideal, says Klopper.
He says SMEs with fewer than 50 computers should outsource their IT, leaving them free to focus on their core competencies. However, he notes that many small companies become disillusioned by outsourcing after dealing with the wrong service providers.
Netsurit`s research has found that small organisations have five key IT service needs: to save time, efficient and reliable service, effective skills training, trust and network security.
Klopper advises small businesses to look for an IT service provider that focuses specifically on small business. The service provider should have industry accreditation and partnerships, offer proactive support, a holistic approach to maintenance and a solid customer care plan. It should also offer training and other added value - and the contract should include an exit clause in the case of failure to deliver.
