Overcoming compliance hurdles in Africa

By Nadine Arendse

New legislation, limited and the amount of legislative are some of the major risk, and compliance issues organisations face when expanding into Africa.

This is according to Anushuya Gounden, head of the Africa desk at Deloitte & Touche, who is a speaker at the ITWeb Governance, Risk and Compliance Conference, taking place on 21 February, at The Forum, in Bryanston.

At the conference, Gounden will map risks for organisations that are expanding into Africa by addressing the regulatory and compliance issues organisations need to consider.

“With SA's rigid compliance and governance, moving into Africa proves challenging to organisations, as it's a struggle to duplicate processes with the same standards,” Gounden says.

Risk management is generally not adopted, she continues; risks are also different and, in most cases, higher in other African countries than in SA. This drives the need for greater vigilance, she stresses.

Organisations in SA can minimise risks when extending their businesses into Africa by setting group compliance and governance standards. This will ensure all companies within the group adhere to practices of the organisation, regardless of their geographic location, Gounden says.
