Cloud infrastructure and business mobility company VMware and OVH, a global hyper-scale cloud provider, have announced that OVH intends to acquire the VMware vCloud Air business.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The transaction is expected close in calendar Q2 2017.
vCloud Air is VMware's cloud offering based on the software-driven data centre, and was designed to deliver a secure, hybrid cloud experience.
Dave Funnell, vCAN business development manager at VMware Sub-Saharan Africa, says: "The announcement by OVH to acquire the vCloud Air business shows the continued evolution of VMware's cloud strategy with the focus on Hybrid Cloud and the Cross Cloud Architecture, lessening our focus on providing physical infrastructure. OVH is a long time vCloud Air Network (vCAN) partner with thousands of customers running vSphere private cloud and collaborated closely with VMware to bring SDDC as a Service to market in 2016.
For South African vCAN partners, he says the announcement shows VMware's commitment to the growth of Hybrid Cloud via the vCAN program. "VMware will be retaining hybrid cloud intellectual property and plans to leverage this IP within the vCAN programme, with roadmap and timings to be announced later."
Funnell says the vCloud Air Network is a proven, successful programme, as part of VMware's Cross Cloud Architecture strategy, with partners within Sub-Saharan Africa delivering solutions built upon VMware technology to deliver cloud services to their customers.
"This announcement and the continued investment focus by VMware in solutions for our vCAN partners can only be positive moving forward. I'm looking forward to working closely with our partners to deliver new solutions and grow the business even further. "
Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, says his organisation has enjoyed a long and successful partnership with OVH and views this acquisition as an extension of the partnership and a positive for VMware's customers and partners.
"Customers will have access to OVH's global footprint, high-touch customer support, and still retain the VMware SDDC technology innovation that they are accustomed to," Gelsinger adds. "We remain committed to delivering our broader Cross-Cloud Architecture that extends our hybrid cloud strategy, enabling customers to run, manage, connect, and secure their applications across clouds and devices in a common operating environment."
