Packeteer's Mobiliti solution eclipses 1 500 customer milestone

Johannesburg, 29 Aug 2007

IT Wise, a sub-Saharan distributor for Packeteer, today announced the latter now has over 1 500 separate enterprise customers for Mobiliti software, which is installed on laptop and desktop PCs to support mobile workers, telecommuters and remote users in small office/home office (SOHO) environments.

Packeteer credits Mobiliti's success to its industry-leading performance and unmatched combination of features for mobile user data access, synchronisation and automatic back up.

Recently, leading market research firm Gartner observed that the WAN optimisation controllers (WOC) market is undergoing a transition from early adopters and pilot deployments to large-scale mainstream deployments in 2007.

"As companies deploy the WOC appliance as a primary means of delivering adequate application performance, they will face the dilemma of how to deliver these functions to small office, home office and mobile professionals cost-effectively," commented Joe Skorupa, research vice-president in Gartner's Networking & Communications Equipment area. Gartner expects such client software will become an increasingly important buying criterion.

The Mobiliti solution is part of Packeteer's WAN application delivery portfolio and offers WAN-optimised file access capabilities that are fully compatible with Packeteer's product line.

Recent enhancements to Mobiliti include automatic synchronisation and backup for Microsoft Outlook mailbox files, international language support, and a new administrative console that simplifies and centralises large-scale deployments. Within the coming months, Packeteer will also be releasing a new version of Mobiliti with enhanced acceleration for CIFS and TCP traffic.

"The top two market drivers we see for Mobiliti today are productivity and compliance," observed Alan Menezes, vice-president of marketing at Packeteer.

"On the productivity front, Mobiliti gives remote users better and faster access to corporate data while, when it comes to regulatory compliance, Mobiliti helps facilitate server consolidation and performs automatic backups of data stored on user systems. Likewise, the planned enhancements to Mobiliti will further increase WAN application performance for mobile users and edge data security for the corporate enterprise."
