Speaking today at his first media conference as communications minister, Roy Padayachie asserted his belief in the principles of free media and commitment to open and transparent communication.

Unlike his predecessor, Siphiwe Nyanda, who was rarely available to engage with the media, Padayachie explained that today's press conference was specifically held at the offices of the Department of Communications in favour of face-to-face interaction with the media.

“To the colleagues in the media, I assure you that myself and the deputy minister believe in the principles of freedom of the media. We assure the media that we will always respect the right of the media to engage openly and transparently,” said Padayachie.

“It is our view that the media is a critical force in the development of society and has a positive and leading role to play in the general public about the importance of ICTs in the advancement of society's goals and the creation of a better life for all our people,” he explained.

After the press conference's question and answer session, Padayachie demonstrated his commitment to open communication, as he questioned the media present on how best to engage each other going forward.
