Pakistan to deploy WiMax

Johannesburg, 24 May 2006

Pakistan`s Wateen Telecom is to install the country`s first nationwide that will be the largest WiMax network in the world with over one million users, it says.

The move is part of the national ' Pakistan` programme aimed at connecting the unconnected and bridging the divide.

The wireless coverage in Pakistan is to include broadband data services for voice and Internet access for residential and corporate customers as well as corporate IP virtual private networks and public hotspots.

Wateen Telecom says the initial deployment of the wireless broadband voice and data network will be completed by the end of the year using Motorola`s access network, subscriber units, IP Multimedia Subsystem core and services based on the 802.16e mobile WiMax standard.

The announcement coincides with Motorola`s first public demonstration of its new carrier-class WiMax network, including interoperability with a third-party 802.16e chip from Beceem Communications, at the WiMax World event in Vienna this week.

According to Beceem CEO Shahin Hedayat, the demonstration of interoperability of 802.16e standards-based equipment within six months of the standard`s approval shows the commitment of WiMax Forum members to co-operate in delivering products for trials and deployments.

Motorola`s carrier-class WiMax network supports both the 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz frequency spectrums and uses special antenna techniques to provide greater coverage range and building penetration.

WiMax solutions based on the 802.16e standard support fixed, nomadic, portable and mobile applications, enabling operators to offer in-building fixed and portable service as well as personal broadband and mobile services.
