Launched to the South African market in October by NPC (Electronics) Limited - the exclusive importer and distributor of Panasonic products in this country - the PT-AE900 is the world`s first projector of its kind to boast a contrast ratio of 5 500:1 and a brightness of 1 100 lumens.
The PT-AE900`s performance capabilities have been enhanced by a protracted period of research and development in Hollywood, working collaboratively with David Bernstein (a top Hollywood colourist) and movie industry experts, which yielded new Cinema Colour Management technology that is capable of independently adjusting any one of 1.07 billion colours, without affecting the others.
The result is projected picture quality that not only reflects the intentions of movie directors faithfully but also compares to that of feature films released on the cinema circuit.
Enabled by refinements to Panasonic`s Dynamic Iris technology, including the incorporation of scene-tracking capability (which controls the iris, light intensity and gamma data in real-time according to the scene, 60 times a second), this combination of high contrast and high brightness has reduced screen noise dramatically, minimised detail loss in dark scenes, and improved the reproduction of deep, rich blacks. Bright scenes are much better too, with crisp images and rich tones.
Users can use 3D colour equalisation technology to adjust specific colours as desired; and can choose from seven picture modes tailored to different sources (namely Cinema 1, Cinema 2, Cinema 3, Video, Natural, Normal and Dynamic). In fact, the range of colour adjustments available on the PT-AE900 is eight times greater than its predecessor, the PT-AE700. In addition, the PT-AE900 has been fitted with the same popular 2x optical zoom lens and joystick-operated lens shift functions (horizontal and vertical) as the PT-AE700, which gives users the freedom to use the projector in diverse locations. A high-definition LCD panel with approximately 2.76 million pixels delivers beautifully detailed pictures, with superior fidelity.
Then there`s Panasonic`s proprietary Smooth Screen technology, which uses multiple crystal refraction to reduce the "screen door" effect (black lines between pixels), and thereby deliver images that are remarkably smooth and natural. A newly developed panel drive system suppresses line flicker, while a new prism and crystal plate surface treatment significantly reduce random reflections along the optical path. This, together with a dynamic sharpness control circuit that ensures unobtrusive edge sharpness adjustment - horizontally, vertically and diagonally between adjacent pixels - yields clearer, more natural-looking images with greater depth and realism.
Perhaps most importantly, the PT-AE900 is the first projector to come with a learning remote control that allows you to operate up to eight home cinema components such as a DVD player, amplifier, room lighting and even a powered projection screen from a single controller. A backlit LCD screen on the remote control device makes it easy to see which component you are controlling, even in a dark room.
