PARMALAT, one of the leading Italian food companies and the world leader in milk processing, had a need for a computerised, on-line production monitoring and maintenance management system for 5 of their national sites.
"We needed to get a handle on what was happening on the production lines and at the same time ensure that the maintenance is planned properly," said Ters Conradie PARMALAT Technical Project Manager.
The capabilities that PARMALAT required were:
. Standard framework for the measurement of maintenance.
. Revision and re-implementation of work planning and control procedures.
. Development of PM Schedules for the most critical equipment.
. An audit of the plant and development of an improvement plan.
. On-line monitoring system of the plant`s availability, performance, quality and OEE.
PRAGMA provided these capabilities in the form of the ON KEY APMS (Asset Performance Management Systems), which are integrated Asset Management and Production Monitoring software packages. This software solution has been implemented at all 5 national sites during 2000 to 2001.
Ronnie Taljaard, MD of PRAGMA Africa had this to add, " The benefits which have been realised by PARMALAT include:
. All factories will share relevant maintenance information by utilising the PARMALAT WAN.
. Centralised reporting and information system at head office in Stellenbosch.
. The information system will interface online with the BPCS business information system and will ensure the implementation of standardised maintenance practices within the group.
. Control over personnel, stock and contractors.
. Improved communication between production and maintenance personnel.
. Control and planning of preventative maintenance.
. Effective management information for better asset management and productivity.
. On-line reporting and graphing of the performance of the individual lines in terms of their overall equipment effectiveness."
