The Johnnic Group`s SundayTimes.co.za has launched a Pay As You Use (PAYU) Internet access service in partnership with Internet Solutions and SafikaTel.
The new service offers readers Internet access at R1.78 per minute, without a monthly subscription fee. Fees are billed to monthly Telkom accounts. The service offers technical advice and an e-mail account with an address for life and 12MB of free space.
Users can access the Internet and their mail boxes from anywhere in SA using a single dial-in number.
Sunday Times Online manager Elan Lohmann says the offering is one of a series of new services being introduced to build the Sunday Times community online and complement the newspaper`s content.
He sees the PAYU Internet offering as a useful option for people who don`t spend much time on the Internet, but who simply want to download and send e-mails. "Among the advantages of the service are that people can get online within five minutes of registering. There are no credit checks or delays, so anyone can get online quickly."
Sunday Times also recently added a free bed and breakfast management course to its online offering. Lohmann says about 9 000 people registered for the course, among them about 900 existing bed and breakfast establishments, which will be built into a travel resource at some stage.
He says the site`s interactive content will be increased with the addition of regularly updated TV schedules and a weekly cryptic crossword. A new database system and content management tool to be introduced in the next six months is expected to add significant functionality to the site.
The Sunday Times online has 170 698 unique users and registers around 1.3 million page impressions a month, according to third quarter 2002 figures from ABC-e.
