PC-PoS opens in North America

Johannesburg, 29 Aug 2002

Point of sale (POS) vendor, PC-PoS Inc, has opened offices in Canada as part of its strategy to capitalise on what it believes are "enormous market opportunities" in North America.

This was confirmed by Paul Jules, MD of PC-PoS`s South African subsidiary, PC-PoS SA. Jules said the company is hoping to emulate the successes it is achieving in the UK and other parts of the world.

"A recent Clarendon Report on the UK PoS market has revealed that PC-PoS has been elevated to second position to IBM against volume shipments of POS terminals in the UK. We believe that we will ultimately have a similar impact on the North American market," said Jules.

Claredon Reports Ltd, based in London, is regarded as the leading world authority in ePOS and ECR market data.

Jules said the increase in market share in the UK and other countries represents a significant increase in annual shipments for the group and has elevated the group to a top four position worldwide in just five years.

"PC-PoS is also gaining market share in other countries, including in SA, Australia, Scandinavia, France Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

"The North American POS market is the largest worldwide and we believe that it is actually an easier market to break into than some of the European countries in which we have established a presence. The North American company, which opened in January, is already moving into trading profit and significant branding for the group`s DigiPoS range has been achieved due to the company being short-listed for a number of large contracts."

Locally the company has sold more than 3 000 DigiPoS units during the past three years - and has won contracts with some of SA`s biggest and most technologically advanced retailers, including Clicks, Vodacom and CNA.

"We are gaining market share because of the increasing success of our DigiPoS range of retail systems. When we launched this product line in the UK back in 1997 we were ranked 19th in the UK in terms of installed base. So in just five years we have moved up significantly," said Jules.

Commenting further, he said he believes the company to be the largest supplier of ePOS equipment in SA. The South African subsidiary recently introduced the group`s new DigiPoS Millennium system, an Intel-based machine with a unique jet stream cooling system designed to keep the PoS terminal running at a much lower temperature.

"Besides the fact that our units have a very small footprint, are feature-rich and incorporate a unique Web-based diagnostic capability, our success has also been enhanced by our pioneering efforts in what we call the `PoS-in-a-box` concept`. When a client submits an order, each system is pre-configured, burned in and pre-packaged at our warehouse in Johannesburg, allowing him to adopt a plug-and-play approach to installation. This has proved immensely popular," said Jules.
