PC-PoS secures Epson Intelligent Register deal at Gold Circle

Johannesburg, 31 Oct 2002

PC-PoS South Africa, the local subsidiary of international point of sale vendor, PC-PoS Inc, has landed a R2.2 million contract to supply Gold Circle, the KwaZulu-Natal Racing Association, with 50 Epson Intelligent Register (IR) integrated touch screen point-of-sale terminals, as well as 50 betting card readers.

This follows the provision of 150 Epson IR touch-screen point-of-sale (POS) terminals during 1998.

Regan Atkins, business development manager at PC-PoS SA, said Gold Circle is running its own in-house designed touch-screen Microsoft software on the units.

"PC-PoS," he said, "handled the pre-delivery preparation, including the burning in of the machines, the application loading and the asset tracking of the serial numbers for the IR systems at its Johannesburg technical centre."

Atkins said one of the most important aspects of its service delivery on behalf of clients, including Gold Circle, is the fact that the company provides `hangering` services before the product is shipped. This saves the client a significant amount of time as the units arrive properly configured and ready for installation.

The hangering of systems also takes up a lot of space and consumes human resources. "This means we save our clients additional time and money," said Atkins.

Howard Ash, wagering technology manager at Gold Circle, said the Epson IRs will be deployed in the company`s betting stations throughout the KwaZulu-Natal region. The Epson touch-screen POS units will replace older wagering ticket machines from Control Data Corporation - which have been in use by the company since 1984.

"We chose the Epson IRs because they are composite machines which also come with an in-built printer. The touch screens were chosen because in our environment liquids such as cooldrink and coffee often get spilt on keyboards. The Epsons are also Windows-based and it is important to us that we are able to work in the Windows environment."

The Epson IRs are linked via leased-lines to the company`s file server at the Greyville race course.

Gold Circle also bought an optical card reader and a bar code scanner for each of the 50 Epson IRs.
