PC-PoS to distribute new Metrologic scanner range

Johannesburg, 07 Jul 2003

The South African office of global ePOS technology vendor, PC-PoS, has announced the availability of a new range of high performance scanners from Metrologic designed to meet the most demanding, high volume, supermarket and point-of-sale applications in today`s market.

Supplied by PC-PoS as part of its popular DigiPoS system, the Metrologic ArgusSCAN, VoyagerBT and Stratos models are built around the latest modular technologies available to ensure enhanced performance, reliability and scalability. Selected units are also available in the modern hi-tech charcoal coloured finish.

Jeremy Biggs, product and account manager at PC-PoS, says the ArgusSCAN is fitted with a large, high-speed scan area and a bright 650mm laser, enabling exceptionally high first pass read accuracy for maximum productivity. Described as an aggressive omnidirectional laser barcode scanner, Metrologic`s ArgusSCAN offers a fully automatic scanning operation, ideal for retail, convenience, liquor, grocery and specialty stores.

"The ArgusSCAN is adaptable to a variety of applications," says Biggs. An optional flex-stand can be added, raising the scanner an additional 76mm off the counter top. "Combined with its programmable depth of field, the ArgusSCAN can be customised to meet the requirements of just about any scanning environment," he adds.

Multiple interfaces and data parsing make the ArgusSCAN compatible with most ePoS solutions right out of the box, and the RS232 auxiliary port allows for check readers, magstripe readers or bar code scanner input. Bulk items can also be scanned using a Metrologic handheld laser scanner operating from the auxiliary port of the ArgusSCAN. Furthermore, the ArgusSCAN has been adopted by some of SA`s larger retailers, in particular the product can be seen throughout the Discom and Clicks national chains.

Another new member of the Metrologic range, the VoyagerBT, is a wireless, laser bar code scanner designed for low to medium throughput point of sale or light warehouse applications where the added benefit of a wireless handheld scanner is needed.

"The VoyagerBT offers convenience and the freedom of mobility with its incorporation of Bluetooth wireless technology," says Biggs. An industry first, Bluetooth gives the Voyager a 10 metre working range.

An additional benefit is Metrologic`s patented CodeGate feature. "This remains at the core of the scanner`s functionality," explains Biggs. "The scanner wakes with a touch of the CodeGate button activating the IR sensor. After scanning a barcode, all the user has to do is simply press the CodeGate button and the data is transmitted wirelessly to the host."

Metrologic has also introduced a third new product aimed at the more corporate high turnover retailers. The Metrologic Stratos is a six-sided, bi-optic, in-counter scanner/scale combination and is aimed at companies seeking a replacement for their old flatbed scanners or possibly upgrading their existing four- and five-sided dual-plane scanners.

The Stratos incorporates both vertical and horizontal scanner technology into a single module that can be upgraded to incorporate a scale facility if required. "It is designed for speed, uptime, flexibility and the cost of ownership is remarkably low," says Biggs.

"Metrologic`s point of sale and automatic data capture products, have played a significant role in the global market. From the warehouse to the distribution centre to the checkout, Metrologic has secured significant market share in many industry sectors including retail, hospitality, manufacturing and logistics," concludes Biggs.
