With the launch of PeopleServer 5.0, Cape Town based offices of Red Banner have introduced its first locally developed ColdFusion-based Content Management system to the market. Described as a complete content management system, the product includes workflow and approval access for both small- and medium-sized sites and Intranets.
"PeopleServer 5.0 gives organisations full control of their web content and assets as well as providing the ability to create and manage online data capture forms and dynamic graphs. E-commerce functionality is built in and the system is easily extendable to include extranets and foreign language content - all through a simple browser based interface," says Andre Webb, MD of Red Banner.
"The system eliminates the need for advanced technical skills when publishing web content and adding new areas to the site, saving companies money on recruitment and training. All staff members are included in the production and publication process, and it provides a full audit and workflow trail.
"This enables the content to be managed, approved or rejected; ensuring that everyone can participate while quality is maintained," explains Webb. The browser based administration interface maintains security while allowing administration of the site. All content produced for the site is stored in one central location making it easy to access, archive as well as migrate to other platforms such as digital TV.
The modular approach to PeopleServer 5.0 means that you can tailor the system to meet exact company requirements and budget.
"Many content heavy organisations are already using content management systems. META Group research indicates that interest in content management systems is rapidly expanding to include small and medium businesses," says META Group analyst Jeffrey Mann PeopleServer 5.0 is written in the web development language, Macromedia ColdFusion. The core administration system remains the same for all projects, but is implemented each time using new templates written in ColdFusion. The templates create the look and feel, navigation and functionality of the web site.
"ColdFusion technology is the best choice for building content management applications, and we are pleased to see products of this calibre being developed locally," says Jeremy Matthews, MD, Dax Data. "We view our international relationship with Macromedia as valuable and see a strong future for ColdFusion MX and the collective suite of products in today`s Internet technology`-focused business arena. We expect to be working closely with Dax Data to help promote ColdFusion as an Internet technology in South Africa," says Webb.
The PeopleServer 5.0 system comprises of three components. The administrative interface (which runs in IE5.5 and above on a PC only due the advanced functionality of the WYSIWYG editor, which uses Microsoft`s Jscript); an ODBC compliant RDBMS database and the front end internet/intranet site that supports any platform/browser as requested by the client.
The code can be installed and run on any platform that supports ColdFusion (Windows/Linux/Unix etc).
