PeopleSoft Inc. president and CEO, Craig Conway, recently defined eBusiness for 200 senior executives attending the World Leadership Forum in New York, saying eBusiness is the result of using the Internet to dramatically improve business practices among customers, suppliers, and employees.
Conway participated in a panel discussion entitled "The eBusiness Revolution: R2R (Return to Reality)" at the conference sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association. He was joined by Geoff Unwin, CEO of Cap Gemini Ernst and Young, and Professor Eric K. Clemmons of the Wharton School. The discussion was moderated by Sarwar Kashmeri, publisher and CEO of eBizChronicle.com.
When Kashmeri asked the panelists to define eBusiness, Conway replied by saying, "Using the internet to provide instantaneous information and improve business process, that`s eBusiness - anybody telling you differently is trying to sell you something."
"Technology has allowed companies to create a collaborative network of customers, suppliers, and employees to make real-time, cost-effective business decisions," he continued.
Jan Coetzee, MD of PeopleSoft SA, agrees with Conway and lists three critical factors for running a successful eBusiness, "A company needs integrated applications - such as PeopleSoft software that creates a collaborative network of customers, suppliers, and employees - an implementation partner who understands both the company and the software, and involvement by senior management."
"Cisco Systems, Dell Computer Corporation and Federal Express are outstanding examples of eBusinesses, comments Coetzee.
According to Conway, some products can quickly add the appearance of eBusiness to a company`s website, but this is only a cosmetic approach. Coetzee adds, "Only true integration in a collaborative network, in which customers, suppliers and employees have immediate and simultaneous access to information, makes a company an eBusiness."
The World Leadership Forum was held concurrently with the United Nations Millennium Summit, attended by more than 150 heads of state. The Millennium Summit is said to be the largest gathering of heads of state at the UN.
