Peregrine gets it on track for rail industry

Johannesburg, 10 Jan 2001

Peregrine Systems, the provider of infrastructure management solutions, has introduced RailAnywhere, a new solution to help the rail industry better its rail and improve service.

RailAnywhere will assist companies in managing assets through every phase of the rail operations lifecycle. The asset and maintenance management software offers critical support to rail companies during a time when they face growing pressure to improve service and labour productivity, while reducing inventory costs.

"The rail transport industry in South Africa is in crisis much as it is elsewhere in the world," says Allen Lewis, Peregrine GM at sole South African distributor CCH Enterprise Solutions. "Now more than ever it needs to be able to quantify, manage and reduce costs, and to improve its overall management of assets. Peregrine`s expertise in the full lifecycle management of corporate assets, and transportation asset in particular, makes this new offering a logical next step.

"Peregrine`s FleetAnywhere has already gained rapid market acceptance globally," says Lewis. "RailAnywhere expands Peregrine`s efforts to help the transportation industry manage every aspect of its infrastructure."

Development of RailAnywhere combines the rail expertise and application solution technology resulting from Peregrine`s acquisition of KKO Software.

In today`s demanding environment, rail operators are finding that they need more powerful systems with increased functionality to improve management of rail and railcar assets. RailAnywhere allows operators to manage the lifecycle of their assets through their full economic life. It provides an integrated environment for tracking rail and railcar assets including acquisition, prevenattive maintenance, repairs and modifications, inventory control, purchasing, warranty and disposal.

RailAnywhere can handle an unlimited number of rail assets, workstations and users, adds Lewis. It has true rail functionality, including consist management and wheel tracking, can track railcar and component warranties, and handle multi-unit projects such as overhauls, modifications and other campaigns, improving labour productivity.

The base RailAnywhere system includes automated equipment unit tracking, work orders, purchasing, parts and inventory, warranty recovery, reporting, and the ability to track and manage any number of major component levels, thereby reducing inventory costs.

The three-tier client/server architecture provides flexibility in configuration from workstation, LAN, WAN, Intranet or Internet, which includes access by remote field locations. RailAnywhere runs on the Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server relational databases.
