Perimetrix, a newcomer to the South African data leakage prevention (DLP) market, stepped into the arena four months ago with its new, third-generation Secret Documents Lifecycle (SDL) technology solution.
The company has since secured pilot projects for a national group of legal firms and a government institution, which Perimetrix South Africa MD Cindy Durston says are scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
Durston is confident that Perimetrix will cut a deep and lasting trail in the South African data integrity market. “Our research revealed that South Africa specifically, but also the rest of Africa, is fertile ground for Perimetrix's unique data protection and information security management offering. At a time when data protection and privacy is not only a matter of compliance or legal issue but a business imperative, we recognise a magnificent opportunity to provide organisations with sophisticated protection of their critical and sensitive information, regardless of their size or industry.
“Data leakage is a growing threat that is omnipresent in every organisation, and the old maxim of 'prevention is better than cure' has never been truer - ask the organisations that appreciated this once the damage was done!”
She explains that Perimetrix SDL is a fresh approach to data protection, namely a technological blend of DLP, IRM (Information Rights Management) and ILM (Information Lifecycle Management). “Our SDL technology creates a secure space in which documents are stored, used, moved, and, ultimately, live and die. SafeSpace protects sensitive and confidential data and documents at all points of their life cycle - creation, storage, archiving, deletion, as well as against other actions such as reducing the confidentiality level of a document and moving it to another storage facility.”
Perimetrix SafeSpace is a true DLP solution, designed and developed from grassroots with militaristic security as its foundation. The technological basis of the system is actual knowledge of the documents and components that are being protected, and control over access rights and user actions in order to prevent a breach of corporate policy. Through various permutations of deterministic and probabilistic methods, classified data is detected and safeguarded against inappropriate use or violations - fully, across all channels, with detailed auditing of all transactions, indefinitely.
SafeSpace, underpinned by the SDL technology, is customised to the local business environment and will be ready to deliver against the pending King III and Protection of Personal Information Bill, in 2010. The system pertinently addresses the multiple compliance requirements of the various international standards such as SOX, Basel ll, HIPAA; however, the benefits of this highly adaptable data protection and security control tool surpass those of just meeting compliance requirements.
Durston concludes that the successful deployment of data leakage prevention policy requires a formidable stance regarding breach and violation, which can only be achieved through the combination of military-type tactics in the form of innovative, third-generation technologies like SafeSpace, sound business processes that mitigate risk, and informed people with a preventative mindset. “Keeping Secrets Safe” is the Perimetrix philosophy and the company is proudly paranoid about data protection and security - as all directors should be today!
