Philippine farmers get info via SMS

The News Today reports that farmers in the Philippines can now access new and relevant information through the use of cellphones or short message services (SMS).

Dr Reynaldo Dusaran, dean of Central Philippine University (CPU), College of says SMS is a fast, practical and easy way to provide the farmers the information and technology needed to enhance their farming activities.

In the region, the new SMS programme will be implemented through government-hosted "one-stop information shops" known as Farmers` Information and Technology Centres and the Magsaska Siyentista (MS) programme.

SMS to fight Indian phone theft

India`s Business Standard reports that a stolen or lost cellphone is about to become easier with a new service using SMS to report missing phones.

The project was conceived by the Indian Institute of Management`s Ahmedabad Centre for e-governance along with the office of the superintendent of police for Ahmedabad rural. Users can now SMS their international mobile equipment identification number to a central point. The mobile handset, either lost or stolen, may be tracked as soon as it gets activated.

Apple patches iChat, browser holes

Apple has released a security update to patch an exploit that left users of the Web browser Safari vulnerable to malicious shell scripts; and to correct a vulnerability to Apple`s Mail software and also changes the way iChat handles file transfers to help prevent the "Leap-A" malware.

Macworld.com says security experts revealed that it was possible to Apple`s Web browser Safari to be exploited when a file is downloaded. The previous week it was revealed that a piece of malware called Leap-A had been discovered that could infect the Macs of iChat users who communicate using Apple`s Bonjour zero-configuration networking technology.
