Philips introduces touch technology to LCD flat panels

Johannesburg, 26 Mar 2003

The local subsidiary of Dutch electronics giant, Philips, has announced the Philips 150ST touch-screen, designed to meet the strict demands of the retail, hospitality and industrial sectors. As the latest addition to the local Philips monitor portfolio, the company will make these 15-inch LCD touch screens available on demand.

"Design engineers and OEMs are increasingly turning to resistive touch-screens for applications, including point-of-sale (POS), process control, portable devices and personal information management systems," says Tyrone Young, marketing manager: monitors and LCD projectors at Philips SA.

"However, POS, hospitality and industrial environments benefit most from an environmentally robust solution, such as the 150ST. Built with durability in mind, these resistive touch-screens incorporate progressive design procedures that include an insulated layered construction and integral tail design built for durability."

The 150ST is borne of a partnership between Philips and 3M Touch Systems - a company created by 3M through strategic acquisitions of two established touch companies - Dynapro and MicroTouch Systems. Designed to minimise radiation and distortion, the 150ST offers a maximum resolution of 1 024 x 768 with a 0.297-millimetre horizontal pitch and a tilt base to extend user viewing and comfort.

The product is robust with insulator layers protecting circuitry in high temperatures and humidity, while recognises touch input from stylus, finger, gloved hand, pen or tool. The ergonomic design of the product requires minimal desk space and the screen is available in mist white and black.

Says Young: "There is a wide variety of application and need for this particular product, which is the reason Philips has decided to make it available in SA."
