On-the-move executives can now have their presentations, e-mails, spreadsheets and other documents in the palms of their hands, following the introduced of the new Philips Velo 1 handheld PC.This innovative little machine, which overcomes the portability limitations of standard Windows-based mobile PCs, is being introduced to IT resellers and end-users at the SDD Technology Showcase which takes place around the country during March and April.According to Wendy Birse, Philips product manager at Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), the new Velo 1 is small enough to be taken anywhere, yet it also has all the features that go with a fully equipped mobile desktop including applications voice-recording and communications capabilities. "Indeed, it's the only handheld with a complete set of integrated communications built in, ready to run, with no cards attached," she says. The 17cm Velo 1 was designed by Philips to run Windows CE along with 'pocket' versions of Microsoft applications like Word, Excel and Internet Explorer. This means users can to do real word processing and spreadsheets, surf the web and send and receive e-mail and faxes - or play Solitaire - anywhere. In addition, the Velo 1 comes with an optional Wireless Connectivity Kit which enables users to connect their GSM phone and experience true mobile communication. Or with the Telephone Line Connectivity Kit, users can connect to the Telkom network and use the low power 19.2Kbps data/fax modem to fax, e-mail or access the World Wide Web. Users don't even require a PC card modem.Despite its small 17cm case, the Velo 1 is expandable and upgradable. Users can add more DRAM, Flash memory or ROM software in the two industry-standard Miniature Card slots; or a Velo V-Module for a Type II PC card can be added.Organised by Siltek Distribution Dynamics (SDD), the country's largest broad-based technology distributor, the SDD Technology Showcase is the first IT show of its kind and magnitude in SA and is geared to provide the channel and end-users an unprecedented opportunity to view the latest 'best of breed' IT products from the world's top hardware and software vendors. The SDD Technology Showcase kicked off in Bloemfontein on March 4 and moves through Port Elizabeth, East London, Midrand, Durban, Nelspruit, and Pietersburg before ending in Cape Town on April 23.
