Phones worth millions stolen

R10.5 million worth of cellphones was stolen from a distributor in Kempton Park this weekend.

While the majority of the phones have been recovered, the police still need to determine whether any of the handsets are missing.

Captain Lesibana Molokomme, spokesman for the Kempton Park police station, could not reveal the company's name this morning, and said the case was still being investigated.

It is believed a gang of 15 men overpowered the guards at the cellular distributor's premises and took their firearms from them.

An informant tipped off the police, who arrested three of the suspects and recovered the 16 stolen firearms.

At the scene, the police found four vehicles - a BMW, two bakkies and a 10-ton truck - full of cellphones and laptops.

Molokomme says, in line with patterns observed at petrol stations, it could be a new trend for large gangs to overpower businesses.

He suggests companies beef up their security in order to safeguard themselves.
