Pioneering IT company pilotfish says it will use its recently attained Microsoft Gold Certified partner status to add zing to its cutting-edge offering in South Africa and abroad in 2007.

Last year pilotfish became one of a select band of IT firms in South Africa to become a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. Being awarded the prestigious certification means pilotfish has demonstrated a range of top-notch skills that are recognised by the world software giant.

Kaylash Bhana, KZN branch manager for Microsoft, said about 600 IT firms in KwaZulu-Natal have joined the Microsoft Partner Programme, of which 30 achieved Gold Certified and Certified status.

"The accreditation of the Gold Certified Partner status represents the highest level of competence and expertise with Microsoft technologies while been able to leverage the closest working relationship with Microsoft," said Bhana of the qualification.

Pilotfish, which was founded in 2001, describes itself as a new media agency that develops business applications, software systems and digital communications to help companies increase efficiency and improve customer relationships.

From the balmy port city of Durban, pilotfish serves a host of clients locally and in the US, UK and the Middle East. The company's Adam Shapiro said he was stoked about the accomplishment.

"It's great to be recognised for top service levels and innovation. This is one of the best endorsements you can get from Microsoft. We're proud that we can work with a world leader in developing customised solutions.

"One of our clients is a US-based IT company that we are able to service because of our proficiency with the Microsoft infrastructure," said Shapiro.

Microsoft's Bhana said: "Overall this is very good for pilotfish. It points to their skill and their good customer references."

The Gold Certified status in the Microsoft Partner Program is something to crow about. Every year the select IT firms that receive the accreditation get access to a host of benefits from Microsoft. These range from special access to training and support to expert insights into the latest technologies being developed by Microsoft.

For those of you who need to brush up on your ichthyology (that's the study of fish for landlubbers): a pilotfish is a small pelagic fish found in warm waters (Durban), blue-ish in colour with a few broad black stripes, swimming alongside in a symbiotic relationship with larger sea creatures (pilotfish counts Deloitte, Hulett Aluminium, Unilever and Quiksilver as clients).
