Pinterest, the social pin-boarding site that rocketed to social media stardom early this year with record growth in user numbers, is expanding its reach on mobile devices with the release of new apps.
For the first time, Android users will now be able to download the official Pinterest app for use on their devices. Pinterest says: “Android owners have been very vocal with their requests for an app - every product announcement we've recently made has resulted in the question 'What about an Android app?' We were listening, and our custom-designed Android app makes it simple and fast to pin, so that the time you spend on Pinterest is as productive as possible.”
According to Pinterest, the app works well on Android phones and tablets, regardless of screen size. Pinterest has also released a newly-designed native iPad app, which it says offers possibly “the best Pinterest experience yet”. The new app makes use of the iPad's functionality to incorporate new gestures in the user interface.
The iPhone app has also been redesigned with a new two-column layout that allows users to view more pins at once.
Earlier this month, Pinterest finally became open for registrations (it had previously been an invitation-only service). The service was first created in March 2010, and earned the title of being the fastest-growing independent site in history, after it recorded 11.7 million unique users in January this year.
Data from digital media analytics company ComScore shows Pinterest is continuing to grow, with 31.2 million unique visitors recorded in June (compared to 1.2 million unique visitors the same time last year).
Pinterest allows users to create digital pin-boards by “pinning” content from around the Web to the site. In response to copyright concerns, earlier this year Pinterest allowed sites to opt-out of being included on pin-boards by implementing a “no-pin” code.
