Pizza chain deploys Virtual Private Network linking restaurants with call centres over the Internet

3Com Corporation , the leader in providing advanced networking solutions to retailers, has announced that Mazzio`s Pizza, a US-based chain of 255 restaurants, has deployed a 3Com-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) that harnesses the power and presence of the Internet to form its enterprise WAN infrastructure.

The 3Com VPN solution, consisting of OfficeConnect SuperStack II and NETBuilder II routers and SuperStack II ethernet hubs is enabling Mazzio`s to extend its centralised call centre-based pizza deliveries services to its more remote restaurant locations.

"3Com`s VPN technology enabled us to use the Internet as a far more cost-effective WAN solution for restaurants in locations geographically distant from our call centres"` says Pat Patterson, Mazzio`s Vice President IS. "In fact, the cost of using a VPN based WAN solution is approximately $100 per month for each restaurant, a fraction of the cost of a traditional long distance connectivity solution. With much of our growth expected to come from national expansion, 3Com`s solution plays a pivotal role in our continued success."

3Com VPN Solution Extends Reach While Reducing Costs

Until recently, Mazzio`s intranet was a private network consisting of ISDN and frame relay lines connecting 90 percent of its restaurants to its two centralised call centres in Tulsa and Moore, Oklahoma. The call centres support Mazzio`s delivery and carryout business, representing over 50 percent of total sales for the Mazzio`s Pizza chain. Due to formidably high data communications costs, the remaining 10% of Mazzio`s restaurants, located in Colorado, Arkansas, and Missouri, were not connected to this private network and lacked call center support for pizza delivery services.

The 3Com VPN Solution dramatically altered these economics, allowing Mazzio`s to cost-effectively extend their corporate intranet to these cations technology, 3Com has delivered networking solutions to more than 200 million customers worldwide. The company provides large enterprise, small and medium enterprise, carriers and network service providers, and consumers comprehensive, innovative information access products and system solutions for building intelligent, reliable and high performance local and wide area networks.
