Plasma panels are getting thinner, lighter

Johannesburg, 11 Jul 2006

Plasma panels are going on a diet! They are becoming thinner and lighter, and these slimmer cutting-edge plasma TVs are attracting the attention from both design and techno-savvy customers alike.

In the front line of this `diet campaign` of plasma panel TVs is LG Electronics (LG), a leader in consumer electronics and mobile communications. LG is heading the industry by introducing several new model plasma panels with `Clear Filter` technology. Clear Filter is a single thin film placed in front of the plasma panel rather than a normal thick glass filter, and it is making plasma panels much slimmer.

Normally, a plasma TV has a thick glass filter in front of the plasma panel, which makes the plasma panel fat and causes reflection problems. However, LG succeeded to develop `Clear Filter` technology and is introducing new XGA models with Clear Filter in the 42-inch plasma, preparing even larger sized plasma TV categories.

Along with the `slimming effect`, with Clear Filter, LG`s plasma panels have also become lighter. Moreover, LG Clear Filter eliminates the common double image reflection that prevalently arises in plasma TVs with the glass filter. That is to say, Clear Filter considerably controls light reflection and makes images more vivid and realistic. Therefore, users of plasma panels with Clear Filter have considerable freedom to use the TV in a bright-room, compared to other conventional plasma TVs.

Following world-first technology including single scan and HD-DVR, with Clear Filter, LG is consolidating its global number one position in the plasma panel industry. LG took the position of the world`s largest maker in plasma panels in the first quarter by producing 730 000 panels.

Shethal Bedal, LG Electronics, Sales and Marketing Executive for Digital Display, said: "LG will lead the market for 40-inch or larger flat-panel TVs by maintaining our technology and strong competitiveness on cost. We will keep our spot as the number one plasma panel maker this year and become the largest plasma TV maker in 2007."

The global plasma TV demand is forecast to grow to 25 million units in 2010 from the current demand of 12 million units.
