Polycom has embedded a new standard in its telepresence technology it claims has slashed requirements by half.

The H.264 High Profile is a standards-based video compression technology said to be able to reduce bandwidth requirements for high-definition (HD) telepresence and video conferencing up to 50%.

According to David Stirling, Polycom EMEA telepresence business development manager, the company expanded its support for the technology to position itself competitively in the African market where largely remains a challenge for businesses.

The company says the H.264 High Profile delivers full-motion HD video quality starting at 512Kbps, and full-motion DVD-quality standard definition video, starting as low as 128Kbps.

“Previously, high-definition video would require double that amount to run at 1Mbps. This has resulted in a 50% cut in bandwidth requirements and key executives in South African companies can use video as a day-to-day tool in their business,” says Stirling.

He explains that the decision to adopt this standard means Polycom can roll out unified communications and video solutions that deliver a faster return on investment for businesses.

“Certainly in SA, this has expanded the market for us,” notes Stirling. “It used to be the larger organisations that would purchase telepresence solutions. But this standard has opened the market for smaller businesses to be able to afford HD video conferencing.”

The standard is now embedded across all Polycom systems being developed.
