Pakamile Pongwana, deputy director-general at the Department of Communications, has been appointed as acting director-general.

This is after the former DG, Andile Ngcaba, chose to leave the department after the expiry of his present contract on 15 January, in order to pursue his own business interests within the ICT sector.

A press statement from the department has confirmed that communications minister, Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri, announced Pongwana`s promotion to acting DG this morning and that he will retain the role until a new director-general has been appointed.

Pongwana was in charge of the working committee that studied the various bids in the second round of bidding for the second national operator licence.

He has served as deputy DG in the department`s Telecommunications Business Unit since 2000, a position he filled after having previously been a colonel in the SA National Defence Force.

The department has not yet announced a date by which the new DG is expected to be appointed.
