Power outages impact Telkom customers

Johannesburg, 22 Jan 2007

The high incidence of power outages in large parts of the country are beginning to impact on the telecommunication services of Telkom customers.

Currently, customers experiencing problems are primarily those whose services that are dependent on customer premises equipment (such as telephones, modems, PABXs, etc) that are powered from a customer's home or business. In these instances a lack of emergency standby power generation within customer premises is the primary cause of service interruptions.

Telkom's core plant remains largely unaffected by the outages, owing to the company's extensive backup power generation capability. Appropriate contingency measures are also in place to ensure the quality of our service delivery. In particular, Telkom is assisting emergency services, where possible, to ensure uninterrupted service to the country.

The severity of the power outages has resulted in an influx of calls to Telkom's call centres. However, customers are assured that Telkom is doing its utmost to negate the effect of power outages on our core network, and to provide our customers with uninterrupted service.
