Xiotech Africa has brought PowerNap, a feature of its Emprise 5000 storage system, to the South African market.
The company says PowerNap places Emprise 5000 systems in a low-power standby mode of less than 24 watts when idling and quickly powers them back up, saving companies power and cooling costs.
"With energy costs accounting for as much as 11% of the total cost of storage ownership, the savings PowerNap can deliver are significant in situations where storage access requirements are intermittent," says Derek Rule, country manager for Xiotech Africa.
The feature is available on all Emprise 5000 systems and can be initiated manually onsite, remotely or can be automated, the company notes.
According to Xiotech, PowerNap powers down in 40 seconds and powers up again in 60 seconds.
