PQ Networks recently installed R1 million worth of switched network points in the new multi-media training and learning centre at Port Elizabeth Technikon. PQ Networks is the first company in South Africa to deploy technology of this nature, resulting in one of the most advanced multi-media centres in the country. The technology implemented included Layer3 switching and the installation of a Cisco Catalyst 5500.
PQ Networks competed with 18 other companies for the contract. IT Manager at PE Technikon Andr'e Schonken says: "The innovative design and cutting edge technology was the primary reason for PQ Networks being awarded the business. In addition to this, PQ Network`s reputation to deliver and its service history was also of primary importance." PQ Networks is also responsible for the maintenance and support of the implementation.
"Access to information is one of the most crucial requirements in an educational institution. The solution PQ Networks provided allowed all of our 500 connected workstations to have online access to campus libraries," adds Schonken. "We have received exceptional service from our on-site multi-vendors. The combination of their expertise and guaranteed back-up is crucial to the efficient operation of this technology."
The technology deployed replaced old core switches - resulting in a switching speed of 3.2 gigabits per second. "This means that people using the system have instant access to the information they require. Combined with our support staff, we feel confident that all service requirements will be met and can guarantee quicker recovery in the event of a mishap or crisis," comments John Howell, sales executive at PQ Networks.
"Cisco`s vision of being the leading Internet company, that will change the way we learn is delivered through the technology offering deployed at the PE Technikon," says Anna Whisken, account manager at Cisco South Africa. "Cisco recognises the potential educational benefits that can be gained by linking students to the Internet, providing information as and when required, without long waiting times. The PQ Networks installation has achieved this."
