The paperless office that has been envisaged for some time now looks set to remain in the conceptual phase. That`s according to Traci Maynard, product manager for Hewlett-Packard at Tarsus Technologies.
"For a couple of decades now, there has been talk of paper free office environments. However, paper is still very much in vogue - in fact, printing has increased thanks to the Internet and the availability of superb colour printing tools to the home user," declares Maynard.
She reveals that latest research has indicated that printing is increasing at a year-on-year rate of 20%; and that printed pages outnumber copied pages by two to one.
"People enjoy using the Internet to find graphics and textual formation that they print for later use," she observes. She adds that it remains common practice for company executives to print their e-mail before reading it; people also print directions, and a host of other documents that can be stored electronically. "The common mindset is still stuck on paper," she notes.
New technologies are also adding to the popularity of printing. "Digital cameras with considerable power have been put within the grasp of the home user. Now it is possible for users to capture superb digital images.
However, these don`t remain digital - with printer technology such as Hewlett-Packard`s PhotoReT imaging system, it is possible to print photo quality images for use in a variety of situations, such as decorative use, pamphlets and handouts and corporate brochures.
"In the home and in the office, the printer is working harder than ever. While the paperless office is a great concept, the reality of the situation is that people enjoy printing for a variety of reasons. Whatever these reasons and requirements may be, Hewlett-Packard have the ideal printer to suit your requirements, from the home and small office, through to large workgroups and large format machines," she concludes.
