Cape Town-based Faculty Training Institute (FTI) now offers its successful part-time diploma in IS Project Management in Johannesburg. This follows the highly successful Johannesburg launch of the diploma in Business Analysis earlier this year.
"The exceptional success we have experienced for our Business Analysis course in Gauteng has prompted us to bring forward the launch date for our equally popular IS Project Management qualification," says Steve Erlank, Managing Director of FTI. "We have trained more than a thousand IT analysts and project managers in over 100 organisations in the Western Cape in the last decade, and are thrilled to be able to offer these qualifications in Johannesburg and Pretoria."
The diploma is strongly aligned with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) defined by the Project Management Institute (PMI), but it has additional modules that are crucial to project managers working in the IT industry.
"Managing IS projects tends to be somewhat different from generic project management, although the same underlying body of knowledge is required," says Prof Derek Smith, Director of FTI`s project management programmes. "IS Project Managers also require strong interpersonal communications skills, and must be able to lead and motivate teams of developers, users and technical staff, and must often be aware of specific IT management issues."
The diploma in IS Project Management is the first step on the road to qualification as a Project Management Professional (PMP), the international certification offered by the PMI. An increasing trend is for our graduates to seek this qualification, once they have completed our diploma and have obtained some practical experience.
"FTI also offers an advanced workshop that helps delegates prepare for the PMP exam," says Carol Mould, herself a qualified PMP, and chairperson of the Cape Chapter of the PMI.
A key characteristic of FTI courses is the expertise of the presenters. Prof Smith is a seasoned presenter and researcher, a qualified PMP (Project Management Professional) and co-author of the authoritative "Managing Information Technology Projects" textbook. The course will be co-ordinated by Mould, who is an experienced project management consultant. She will be joined by Prof Johan Smith, a well-known academic, consultant, executive coach and presenter in IT and project management.
The combined experience, knowledge and charisma of the lecturers will undoubtedly make the Gauteng version of the diploma as popular and successful as its Cape-based counterpart.
Past delegates speak highly of FTI`s diplomas, and unsolicited testimonials, even years after the course, confirm the exceptional career-building value that these qualifications offer. In the words of Andrea Gross, who completed the course in 2002: "Really enjoyed this course, was practical and hands-on which ensured a great learning experience. Would highly recommend to anyone!"
The diploma in IS Project Management starts in Johannesburg in August.
