Progress beats Oracle, Microsoft in cost of ownership study

Johannesburg, 08 Apr 2004

The Aberdeen Group has shown that over a five-year period the Progress OpenEdge Platform has the lowest visible cost of ownership (VCO) in a mass-deployment architecture when compared to platforms offered by Oracle, Microsoft and IBM. The savings are attributed to the OpenEdge platform`s combined strength of low deployment costs in a Web-based environment, low ongoing fees and low database administration costs.

The results were released in the Aberdeen Group`s Executive White Paper, "Embedded Infrastructure and Mass-Deployment Cost-of-Ownership Study: 2003 Update".

Aberdeen has acknowledged the Progress database`s reputation for cost-effectiveness and hands-off administration for the past five years. In the past two years, Aberdeen has also offered one of the first comparisons to analyse the costs involving all major components of an application built on the Progress OpenEdge platform, including database application servers and client licences. Meanwhile, other market research firms have begun to publish their own findings regarding the value proposition of the Progress OpenEdge Platform.

Highlights from the study include:

* The lowest VCO for workgroup embedded infrastructure in a mass-deployment architecture belongs to Progress OpenEdge. OpenEdge is an average of 40% less expensive when compared to Microsoft`s VCO.

* The lowest VCO for enterprise embedded infrastructure in a mass-deployment architecture belongs to Progress OpenEdge. OpenEdge is 90% less expensive than Oracle`s VCO and 50% less expensive than IBM`s VCO.

* Progress`s advantage is especially marked in large-scale mass-deployment architectures.

* Mass-deployment architectures continue to proliferate.

* Supplier technology continues to offset rising people costs.

* Robust, reliable technology and cost-effectiveness are two compelling criteria for choosing database technology.

* The cost of managing and maintaining the embedded infrastructure is the largest expense of the long-term cost of an embedded infrastructure.

"The Aberdeen study reinforces the key value proposition of Progress, which is that our OpenEdge platform offers the lowest total cost of ownership, highest reliability, ease of use and lowest maintenance in the market today," says Rick Parry, MD of Progress South Africa.

"For companies looking for effective ways to streamline operations without sacrificing performance, we offer development, deployment and management technology powerful enough to exceed the high-cost alternatives, while guaranteeing that their investment will carry them well into the future."
