Progress strengthens support for Linux

Johannesburg, 26 May 1999

Progress Software is to strengthen its support for the Linux operating system by delivering new products to its independent software vendors (ISVs) and end-user customers to help them port more than 5 000 business applications to Linux.

"This is in keeping with the Progress promise to future-proof customers` applications for the Internet age," says Richard Firth, chairman of Progress software development house MIP Holdings.

According to IDC, Linux is the fastest growing operating system on the market today. The analyst firm predicts that commercial Linux shipments will rise at a compound annual growth rate of 25% - compared with 10% and 12%, respectively, for other client and server operating systems.

Progress Software ISVs annually deploy over $1,5 billion in Progress-based applications that answer diverse business and industry-specific requirements.

Progress will provide scalable, multi-tier Linux support by porting key Progress application deployment and management products to Linux. These products include: Progress Open AppServer, an application server for deploying shared application components across heterogeneous environments and the Progress RDBMS, for the scalable storage of SQL and 4GL application data.
