Offering a visual edge for mobile workers who spend most of their time giving sales presentations, SA Philips is bundling the ProScreen 4700 LCD projector with its digital camera at no extra cost. The deal, motivated by the maturing of digital photography and its potential integration with LCD projectors, will come to market through Philips and local distributor, Solution Technologies. Nalini Singh-Hofer, LCD product manager at SA Philips, says the market is wide open for a bundle of this nature, as projector adoption trends reflect high activity in the graphics, design and corporate arenas. That uptake looks set to increase, she says. "There is a high degree of misunderstanding surrounding LCD projectors - they are perceived as simple tools for displaying simple images. Consequently, the price tag seems inordinately high [upwards of R35 000 for a mid-range device]. "The fact is notebook computers, workstations, video machines, DVD drives, Philips PDAs (Velo) and digital cameras can all be directly hooked up to an LCD projector for presentation work. Image resolutions far exceed those of traditional devices, built-in speakers are there for multimedia presentations, and the device is only slightly bigger than many laptops." It is partly these facets which leads Philips to expect the bundle to find favour among the mobile sales force, in the corporate boardroom, at entertainment cafes and restaurants - virtually any arena where high quality and versatile projection from a compact unit is needed. "Pricing is another factor which counts in our favour. The ProScreen 4700 bundle will come to market at about R30 000. Add to this the low cost of ownership thanks to the UHP [ultra-high performance] lamp and we have the most cost-effective machine with these specifications," adds Singh.
