Protea Hotel Victoria Junction megabyte line

Johannesburg, 06 Nov 2003

The Protea Hotel Victoria Junction has initiated an industry first by installing a 1MB Internet line, which supplies all 172 bedrooms and public areas with instant high-speed Internet capabilities.

Said Martin Kuhlmann, from leading Internet service provider (ISP), DataPro: "According to my information and research, there is no other hotel that offers this solution in terms of true high-speed Internet access associated with both an in-room and wireless connection. There are some that have some form of wireless and/or in-room connection, but none that offer the complete solution associated with a 1MB Internet link."

The public areas throughout the hotel are capable of complete wireless connectivity, called `hotspots`. These hotspots have been implemented for both for the guests and visitors, allowing for prepaid, credit card and hotel room billing. This is ideal, taking into account the type of visitor that this urban hotel attracts.

There is a high demand for high-speed Internet access (HSIA), especially as the guest portfolio of the Victoria Junction hotel targets the corporate and film industry, all of whom require some means of Internet connectivity for e-mail and downloading visuals.

"Business profiled guests have a high requirement for e-mail connectivity, so it made sense to provide not only a permanent Internet link, but a high-speed link with all the bells and whistles," commented Neill Baird, General Manager of Protea Hotel Victoria Junction.

The guest will benefit immensely from this solution; firstly as there is a very high-speed connection, with Protea Hotel Victoria Junction being the first hotel in SA (and Africa) that has a minimum of a 1MB connection. And secondly, the guests will not be required to change any of their settings on their laptops as the HSIA solution takes care of this.

"Even though we`ll be satisfying all our target markets, the model on which the solution was based was primarily on the business and film production profile of our hotel," concluded Baird.
