Botswana Telecommunication Corporation (BTC), a national fixed-line operator servicing more than 120 000 subscribers, has contracted Protek, a leading provider of business and operation support systems, to implement an upgraded version of its Network Management system for its national microwave backbone (originally supplied by NERA).
BTC has been using Protek`s Network Management since 1986 to support its PDH and SDH Microwave Transmission part of its network. To enable better service to its growing customers in the changing market environment, BTC needed to enhance control over its network infrastructure. The upgraded version of Protek`s Network ensures faster fault response and resolution time. Network events can now be intelligently correlated, allowing BTC to identify the root cause of network faults and hence provide an overall improvement in customer service.
"We realised that our business required enhanced network management capabilities," said Ditirwa Mphoeng, Chief Engineer, BTC. "For many years we`ve been using Protek`s Network Management system and developed a good partnership with this supplier. When the need for enhanced functionality became apparent, we contacted Protek with an upgrade request."
BTC runs multiple hardware platforms and operating systems, and because Protek`s Network Management Release 5 is platform independent, it can be easily integrated into the operator`s multi-technology and multi-vendor environment. The new release also enables flexible system configuration directly via the user interface, thus allowing BTC to have more control over the system without vendor involvement. "We were impressed with the enhanced functionality and flexibility of Protek`s upgraded solution, which led to our decision to sign the contract with Protek," commented Ditirwa Mphoeng.
The openness and flexibility of the system will enable a fast and cost-effective implementation, bringing significant business benefits to BTC. "We are delighted that the quality of our product and services gave BTC a reason to upgrade its network management system with us," commented Paul Beaumont, CEO. "I am confident the upgraded product will provide BTC with even better control of their network."
