Protek signs new billing deal in Mali

First GSM operator in Mali selects Protek to supply its customer care and billing solution
Johannesburg, 06 Sep 2002

Protek, a leading global supplier of business and operational support systems, today announced that it is to supply and install its Customer Care & Billing (CCB) system and Analytical Business Reporting (ABR) solution to Malitel SA, the wireless wing of Mali`s incumbent telecommunications operator SOTELMA. Malitel is the only GSM Mobile operator in Mali and provides pre- and post-paid services to its growing customer base. This is Protek`s second contract signed with a French-speaking African customer in less than three months.

As Malitel`s business was growing, its existing legacy billing system could no longer support the fast-changing requirements. Malitel needed a more flexible and functionally rich solution that could help it roll-out new products, offer a world-class service to its customers and gain insights into user behaviour. Malitel invited bids from several leading vendors and after rigorous evaluation, selected Protek`s CCB and ABR solution. Protek is also supplying Malitel with a hardware platform, for a complete turn-key solution.

Protek`s open architecture will enable the implementation of the two products and the migration of data from the legacy system to be completed by the end of 2002. Protek will also integrate its solution with the Alcatel prepaid platform and the in-house financial management system. This will enable Malitel to gain a rapid and predictable return on investment and obtain immediate business benefits, such as increased revenue through flexible tariff management, improved customer care, and reduced operating costs through automation of business processes.

"We chose the solution from Protek because of its breadth of functionality and rapid implementation. The technology and the project management approach demonstrated by Protek suited our requirements perfectly. Besides, Protek has a strong presence and a proven track record in Africa," said Ibrahima Diarra, senior manager at Malitel.

Paul Beaumont, Group CEO of Protek, commented: "I am delighted that once again we have secured a win in West Africa. We can now firmly claim that Protek has established itself as a leading and respected vendor in French-speaking Africa "
