PS3 gets 39% market share

Despite recent statistics showing dire numbers of possible PS3 buyers, recent polls indicate consumers are warming up to the gaming console, says PS3 Land.

According to a report released by ITmedia, the 39% of the gamers surveyed have said that they plan to buy a PlayStation 3. The number follows closely the 40% who said they will buy a Nintendo Wii.

The Xbox 360 remains the underdog, with only 16% saying they would like to buy it.

MS keeps at gaming

Microsoft`s COO has reiterated that the giant believes in the gaming space, even though the Xbox 360 continues to be a money-losing business, says Next Gen.

Microsoft entered the console market in 2001, the Xbox has been one of heavy investment, leading to significant losses in its home and entertainment division.

The losses are clear in recent financial reports. For fiscal year 2005, Microsoft`s game division posted a $485 million net loss. In fiscal 2006, ended 30 June 2006, the division lost $1.26 billion.

Half online gamers are women

A study released earlier this week by Nielsen Entertainment (its third annual Active Gamer Benchmark Study), shows women make up 64% of North America`s 117 million online gamers, PlayStation News reports.

The study did not reveal any particular genre or game type that were being played by women, but it is expected that online browser games such as Zuma, on various flash Web sites, made up a large proportion of the female online gamers.

The teenage market dominates any other age group in numbers, but the study does say that more than 15 million gamers (about 8%) are at least 45 years old.

No price cut for PSP

Even though the Nintendo DS has been outselling the Sony`s PlayStation Portable all year, Sony doesn`t care too much, explains Gamers Squad.

Sony has stated: "We don`t necessarily see the need to cut the price [of the PSP]. We need to offer broader value and introduce new consumers to what the PSP can do".

The PlayStation Portable will interact with the upcoming PlayStation 3, and it will have 110 new games by the end of 2006. Will somehow ensure its prolonged success?
