PS3, Wii push down game sales

NPD reports slightly slower game sales

Consumer and research firm NPD has reported slightly slower game sales in the US for October.

Game titles sold only increased 1% to $369 million, according to Gamasutra, with overall sales (including hardware and accessories) up 16% to a shade under $650 million.

But with the Wii and Playstation 3 launches next week, most are seeing this as merely a stutter in the growth of the US console games market.

Harrison won't commit to PS3 date

Boss of worldwide studios at Sony, Phil Harrison has not guaranteed that the PS3 will be available in Europe in March as was previously announced by the company.

"Given that all of our previous statements about launching in Europe simultaneously with the US and Japan turned out not to be the case, I would not like to make any definitive statements on that."

This is bad news for South African gamers wanting to get their hands on Sony's latest baby - we fall under Europe, so will have to wait as patiently as they do.

Choices, choices

For consumers over the pond who are a little spoiled for choice, USA Today has laid out the options: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii or nothing at all.

Because less than half a million PS3 units will be available to the millions of eager US gamers, the chances are slim of getting one. The Wii will be available in far greater numbers - 1.2 million according to Nintendo - and the Xbox 360 has been available since last Christmas.
