PwC launches global e-security service in SA

Johannesburg, 31 Jan 2001

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) today launched the South African arm of its global trusted third-party , beTrusted. Headquartered in Columbia, Maryland in the US, beTrusted is designed to ensure secure online business communication.

Based on public key infrastructure (PKI) technology, beTrusted issues electronic certificates which provide clear proof of identity online. It aims to maintain privacy of sensitive information, authentication, message integrity and non-repudiation of transactions.

"The guarantee of faultless security is clearly important in the local business environment, and beTrusted is designed to ensure this. It has application for large corporations, financial institutions, vertical industry sectors and major government institutions, among others."

Vanessa Powell, beTrusted sales manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, believes the venture leverages PwC`s existing brand and reputation in the new economy. It`s designed to create significant transaction-based income on very high volumes of medium value, she says.

"The issue of who to trust over a public network with millions of participants, and how much trust should be placed in their certificates and signatures, is as much a business issue as it is a technology one. While technology continues to improve, the basic tenets of trust and legal issues are lagging behind."
