Designed specifically to address increasing connectivity and performance requirements for IP-intensive `power branch` and regional site applications, Q Data Distribution (QDD) has announced Nortel Networks` Passport multiservice access switch, the first of a new family of Passport products.
The Passport 5430 combines BayRs IP technology with Nortel Networks voice and switching capabilities, integrating enterprise voice, data and video over a common network infrastructure.
QDD product manager Anton van Bers says the switch provides high-speed WAN connectivity over frame relay, ATM, ISDN and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). The 5430 also support IP services, including Voice over IP (VoIP) Quality of Service (QoS) and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs).
The remote office networking landscape is changing rapidly as workgroup and collaborative applications have compounded the amount of Layer 3 routing calculations and connectivity options required at the WAN edge. Historically, most remote site traffic remained within the branch office and required low-speed WAN bandwidth.
"Driven by technologies like VPNs for secure Internet communications and advanced IP services such as voice/data integration, QoS and multicast, the majority of today`s `power branch` office traffic traverses the WAN to access centralised servers or Web-based applications," explained van Bers.
Also announced is a new VoIP expansion module for the BayStack ARN. Integrating voice, data and fax traffic over an IP intranet can significantly reduce call charges between offices by sharing existing data network bandwidth as well as deliver common management and enhanced user services," he noted.
"The BayStack ARN VoIP module supports up to four analog ports and two optional serial ports for legacy applications," he added.
