Pernod Ricard, the second largest operator of spirits and wines in the world, has implemented QlikView throughout its South African operations. Pernod Ricard South Africa is now using QlikView, the innovative business intelligence and data analytics software, to respond faster to changes in its supply chain and speed the decision making process.

The South African division of Pernod Ricard has grown from a two-person operation to become the fourth largest liquor company in South Africa in just a few years. It now has a staff of 147 and its Jameson brand is the fastest growing proprietary whiskey. To manage this massive growth, they required better tools to carry out their objectives faster and more effectively. Like many organisations, they had problems with their reporting needs. "We used to wait sometimes weeks to get the necessary information and our level of faith in the produced reports was not very high. Every manager believed that his report or spreadsheet was more accurate" says Mark Backhouse of Pernod Ricard.

"With QlikView, everybody works with the same data and the level of trust is therefore very high. QlikView is also very fast and allows us to deal with a lot more information in a very simple way. This means that there is broad acceptance of the tool and we now work with up-to-date information all the time," explains Backhouse.

The benefits of QlikView have been significant and the product has changed the way in which Pernod Ricard SA run their business. "QlikView not only saves us time and therefore money, but helps us make money too. We can now see which customers our reps call on, how often, and what the values of the transactions are. All of this information used to be so cumbersome to analyse. In one year alone we lost a number of customers because there was confusion amongst the reps as to who was calling on which customer. A major benefit of QlikView is that it has helped us with customer retention. It shows us where the gaps are, who isn`t buying and which products aren`t selling," he adds.

QlikView South Africa approached Pernod Ricard SA roughly a year ago. "Once we showed them how QlikView could easily address their complex stock and sales analysis requirements, they decided straight away to use the software at the executive level for a few months," says Davide Hanan, Managing Director of QlikView South Africa. "The success of this exercise was such that it is now being rolled out to line management and in new areas such as finance".

"Business intelligence has been around for years but it hasn`t always delivered on what it promised. QlikView is affordable, it allows for better decision-making because your base data is correct and it ultimately improves your bottom line," concludes Backhouse.
