QuickBooks says SA payroll needs to be more SME focused

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel's 2006 budget proved to be of benefit to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), especially the tax breaks. However, local accounting and payroll vendor, QuickBooks, says that South Africa's payroll software needs to be more tailored towards SME markets for them to fully benefit from the tax breaks. Sharon Bruce, marketing manager at QuickBooks South Africa, says that reporting and depositing payroll taxes in an accurate and timely manner is vital to a business. If this is not managed effectively, late or inaccurate deposits will result in penalties and interest charges. A payroll system that easily meets the needs of SMEs is thus vital to a company's success as it assists a business in understanding its payroll responsibilities and selecting the best method to meet them.

Bruce believes that South Africa's present payroll market is largely focused on solutions for large corporates as opposed to SMEs: "As a leader in the provision of SME solutions, we have recognised that this market doesn't require a complicated payroll package. Instead, SMEs require a solution that is quick-to-use, easy-to-implement and readily resolves any payroll or tax legislation complexities that may arise."

Realising the need for such a payroll solution, QuickBooks SA offers a package that is specifically catered for the SME market and is suitable for companies consisting of one to 120 employees. It is scalable, affordable and offers great value-for-money. In addition, SMEs will enjoy low annual payroll license fees on offer from QuickBooks and its ability to integrate with QuickBooks accounting software: "With QuickBooks, SMEs have access to home-grown software that has global recognition and is affiliated to the world's number one best selling accounting software brand."

Believing payroll is about human resource, Bruce says it has more extensive functionality including leave modules and enabling SMEs to move away from manual systems. "We also believe that integration within the payroll sector is vital, which is why we already offer seamless integration with our accounting products."
