The R165 million deal for the roll-out of the prepaid airtime and electricity dispensing devices in the recently announced e-voucher initiative between Leaf Wireless and Sebros Telecomms is earmarked for the end of March.
As part of the deal the companies will jointly roll-out over 25 000 of the Belgium-made Intellect POS devices selected to deliver the e-vouchers. These devices will be hosted on a Leaf M-Commerce platform which will provide the backbone infrastructure for the project.
Due to the nature of Sebros` business and its core focus being on the development of SA, the project brings with it the promise of a job for the installation of every unit. The companies have gone as far as to commit to 25 000 units equalling 25 000 jobs.
According to Sebros: "The creation of employment is a key motivating factor in our empowerment drive. To us empowerment is not just about bringing technology to people in remote areas, but it is proving an individual wealth creation component to the roll-out of the very services we are set to provide."
The initial applications, which will be delivered through the project, include prepaid airtime distribution to all three of the major mobile networks in the country and fixed-line operator Telkom, as well as the dissemination of prepaid electricity.
Quinton Leigh, MD of Leaf Wireless, says the companies are very excited about the additional empowerment opportunities which will be offered to channel partners and service providers through the e-voucher project.
"True job creation and true empowerment are difficult things to deliver, and a lot of people provide empty promises around the delivery of these two very important elements of the South African nation. This project is going to provide the perfect platform from which we can get local communities and individuals involved as they can also start benefiting not only through the use of the technology but by providing a business leg to it as well," states Leigh.
The companies are jointly pushing the project as `One unit one job` or the `job in a box` project. The planned roll-out of the units will be done over 12 months with concurrent geographical focus. Consumers will be able to take advantage of the services in a couple of weeks from now.
