The Xbox 360 will be unveiled at SA`s gaming expo, rAge, which starts tomorrow (29 October) at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate.
Michael James, senior project manager for rAge, says: "The launch of the Xbox 360 locally is a significant event and will change the way gaming in SA is seen and experienced."
There is also going to be the African continent`s biggest LAN, with 1 200 gamers playing on the network for 53 hours.
"rAge actually started as an idea to market New Age Gaming (NAG) magazine to a wider audience," explains James. "The thinking is that if we could grow the computer and gaming industry in SA quickly by doing something like rAge, everyone would benefit, especially our magazines."
The gaming industry in SA has been growing exponentially, James explains. Both NAG and the rAge expo have seen growth over the last three to four years. "Attendance has increased by approximately 30% each year, from a visitor and exhibitor perspective."
James believes it to be a certainty that gaming, as a whole, will continue to grow and SA is fortunate to learn from mistakes made in the bigger world territories before stumbling into them.
"We`re seeing more and more people getting into gaming. The average age and gender of the typical gamer is changing all the time," says James. "Before long, the gamers of today will be the grandparents of tomorrow and all of this only helps grow the industry."
Other features of the event include Intel`s Core 2 Duo processor launch, the annual Arena 77 Computer-Strike competition, international gamer Fatal1ty, and an all-girl pro-gaming team "Girlz of destruction" competing against local players.
