RangeGate secures Microsoft partner status

Johannesburg, 15 May 2001

Mobile business intelligence company RangeGate has been appointed as a mobile solutions business partner by Microsoft South Africa, making it the preferred supplier of mobile solutions for local Microsoft clients.

"The Microsoft mobile solutions partner programme will assist RangeGate in taking to market solutions developed within Microsoft mobile software," says RangeGate strategic partner manager Hylton McCabe. "The partnership follows our development of an application on the Pocket PC platform which enables users to stay connected wirelessly to their offices. It empowers users with a flexible solution that gives them real-time access to their systems at any time and in any place."

McCabe notes that the application was developed in response to the growing demand from the corporate sector for wireless access to company databases. Mobile access allows a company`s employees to conduct business while they are away from their desks. This includes entering orders, inventory management, direct procurement, materials management, customer information as well as personal information management (PIM) including e-mail, to do lists and calendaring.

"This allows companies to provide better customer service and increase operational efficiencies from anywhere," he says. "For example, a sales representative dealing with a customer could use a wirelessly enabled Pocket PC to access real-time order status and inventory levels as well as resolve problems and place orders, all while on site with the customer."

McCabe adds that RangeGate`s relationship with Microsoft was cemented when RangeGate installed a wireless solution at Microsoft`s headquarters in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, consisting of the Pocket PC platform, a wireless LAN and an RF card.

"Providing a wireless solution for the Microsoft building allowed us to demonstrate RangeGate`s technology to a major industry player," says McCabe. "It has subsequently given us the opportunity to develop a powerful application for deployment on the Pocket PC platform to address mobile needs and bring value to our customers."
